How to Read Academic Papers (Without Losing Your Mind)

Quick notes:

3 Pass read through

  1. frame work: Abstract, introduction, conclusion, section headings and any tables or diagrams. Ask yourself:
    • what is the point or thesis?
    • what are the main arguments?
    • why is it important?
    • how does it contribute to my field?
    • TRY TO SUMMARISE THE PAPER WITH A SENTENCE OR TWO.
  2. Dig in to the paper, pay close attention to the beginning and ending. If there are any words that you don’t understand look them up now. Try to answer some of the questions you asked in the first pass.
  3. Tie it all together, gain a good idea of what the paper is trying to say, reflect and analyse what the author has said.Try to write the notes in your own words. Answer these questions:
    • Did the author do what they set out to do?
    • Are the methods they used sound?
    • Are their arguments fluid and logical?
    • Do they make any assumptions?
